The 5 best tips for surviving student life

Writer: Nuery IslamNuery Islam

Students sometimes struggle to balance work, study and leisure time. As a student and former high school teacher, I will share my honest strategies with you. I have experience in both roles, so I fully understand how it feels. I will discuss the best steps to handle your student life. Come on, let's get started!

1. Open a planner and take a deep breath!

If you are like me and prefer to plan your days using smartphone apps instead of hard-copies planners, then I suggest getting an app which has planner functionality. You can either download a free one for Android or iOS or customize your Google calendar to plan your day. Basically, if you like traditional diaries or notebooks, use them or an app to plan your daily schedule.

2. Prepare yourself for the task at hand

College and university students are required to submit their works via sites such as blackboard, which I use myself as a Humber College student. Nowadays, everyone in high school or middle school takes classes online thanks to COVID-19. Make a list of tasks (homework, assignments, work, fun activities, etc) and number them based on their deadlines, then accomplish them one by one throughout the day. Don't forget to prioritize the most important tasks closest to the deadlines first - focusing on due dates first and the rest can be done on a flex schedule.

3. Recruit a study buddy

I'm sure that when we combine our knowledge, ideas, and notes with other students who are classmates or friends, we'll be able to understand everything better and gain new information. By doing so, we will benefit our academic studies and receive better marks or results. Team up in person or better yet create a study group online using apps such as WhatsApp or Facebook messenger. Study groups are a great opportunity for sharing study materials and helping each other with assignments, quizzes, and projects.

4. Utilize the school services

Available in colleges and universities for students who need extra help improving grades, such as peer mentors, writing center, libraries, and tutoring. Take advantage of those resources, as most of them are free. As a self-reliant student, I find it hard to seek help - I'm very self-sufficient and figure things out on my own lol. Do not follow my method because it is not guaranteed to work, instead learn from my mistake and do not forget to utilize those online and campus services.

5. Prepare all drafts for teacher's review before submission

I think this goes without saying, but make sure you have a backup or draft copy of your course work with you when you're meeting your teachers, whether it's in person or virtual. They can give feedback and suggestions for your work upon checking or reviewing it. Which will help you flawlessly polish and complete your work before submitting. If you do this, you will save yourself from losing a few marks here and there or not understanding why certain marks were lost.
